In the week leading up to Easter, the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra, conducted by Martynas Staškus, will present “A Musical Enigma,” a programme dedicated to reflecting upon the great mystery of Easter – the miracle of death and resurrection. The programme combines the splendour of the Baroque and the vibrant force of contemporary wind music. The concert opens with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Chorale Prelude O Sacred Head, Now Wounded – a profound meditation on suffering that leads us into the radiant brilliance of his renowned Little Fugue. The programme continues with two works by contemporary American composers: Frank Ticheli’s Sanctuary, filled with tranquility and spiritual resolve, and David Maslanka’s compact symphony Give Us This Day, whose monumental sound embodies human hope and daily grace. The programme reaches the high point with the British composer, Edward Elgar’s brilliant Enigma Variations (arr. T. Laughlin), whose evocative theme of enigma subtly reflects the eternal mystery of existence and faith, turning this concert into a contemplative experience in anticipation of Easter.
