VERSIJA NEĮGALIESIEMS

6 April, 19.00, Great Hall of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society, Aušros Vartų Str. 5, Vilnius

The biography of Gustav Holst, a British composer who lived and worked during the late 19th and early 20th century, is perhaps best illustrated by his orchestral suite The Planets, composed in 1917. His music had a huge impact on the composers of the era and is reflected in generations of Hollywood film score composers, from Steiner and Williams to Zimmer. This concert aims to introduce the audience to a much broader picture of Holst’s oeuvre, from his own works for symphonic wind orchestras to those of his contemporaries and later composers, where Holst’s influence can be heard. The programme includes not only the iconic The Planets (1917), but also the First Suite for Winds in E-flat (1909). We will also hear music by composers who worked, and continue to work in his stylistic orbit, including Richard Strauss’, Thus Spoke Zarathustra: Introduction (1896), Edward Elgar’s Nimrod from the Enigma Variations (1909), and John Williams’ Concerto for Tuba and Winds (1985). Martynas Staškus will conduct. The soloist is Constantin Hartwig (Germany), the internationally acclaimed tuba virtuoso of the younger generation.
