This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The musicians of the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra have prepared a programme of chamber music featuring works by Čiurlionis and his contemporaries. Like many Symbolists of his time, Čiurlionis sought a synthesis of the arts. This idea prompted a programme that consists of works from different composers created at a similar time, that reflect related artistic ideas. So works by Čiurlionis, Debussy, Reinecke, Holst and other composers, or excerpts from their works, will be performed in unexpected juxtapositions and arrangements, as minute, fleeting particles of light – sparks – ignite briefly, appearing and disappearing. Sparks and Fantasies, two important cycles of paintings from Čiurlionis’ transitional period from realistic to Symbolist representation and his late mature period, reflect the style development presented in the concert.
